Oliver! (1968)

The best musicals are ones that focus on a storyline and cut to songs for a few minutes throughout. The worst for me, are one with extremely long song and dance scenes, and a plot that never moves.

We all know the scene, "Please sir, may I have some more?," what I didn't know is that it happens in the first 15 minutes, and is the only thing that happens in the first 30 minutes. There are some incredibly long song and dance scenes at the beginning of this film, at about an hour and a half very very little has happened. Then around the two hour mark they stop with the sound and dance and spend the last 30 minutes as a drama.

The balance is just awful. After two hours I just wanted it to be over, I no longer cared what was going to happen, and could sum the plot up in three sentences. When you don't care about the characters, and have no background after two hours then why should you care? Just watch the opening scene and consider this film watched, you get the only scene that means anything for the entire film. A complete waste of time...
