The Bad Seed (1956)

The horror genre is full of "originals." It is by far the genre with the most "sub-genres." You have slasher, thriller, gore, zombie, vampire, alien, mockumentary, etc. This film was the first of it's kind... a child killer. It is a concept that has been repeated several times, The Omen, The Good Son, etc.

It is a scary concept. Children are though to be pure, that they are corrupted by bad influence or a troubled childhood. To think that a kid from a wealthy family, safe upbringing, and loving parents would be cold and heartless was unthinkable. At the same time the concept is simple, and can be looked at as such, and easily dismissed.

I found the acting of Nancy Kelly (the mother) to be authentic and touching. I found Patty McCormack to be creepy, and fantastic for a child's role. The intense piano scene was a little silly to me, but the discussions with the groundskeeper were excellent.

A very good addition to the 101 Horror Film book.
