Letter From An Unknown Woman (1948)

I'm not one for the romance genre, but this mystery romance was quite interesting and not that bad. Directed by Max Ophüls, a German director that I have yet to see a film by. This film was one of the last for me to finish the filmsite.org's top 100 movies.

Starring and centered around the life of Lisa [Joan Fontaine], we start the film with Stefan [Louis Jourdan] returning to his home as he prepares to get out of town because he has been challenged to a duel. As viewers we have no idea how he got into this mess, but we can tell that he is pretty well off and handsome. We also learn pretty early on that he is a womanizer so he might not be sure who's husband is coming after him which is all the more reason to split town. Before he leaves, he is delivered a letter which he sits down and reads. We go into flashback to Lisa's story, a girl that has loved him for a long time and we get the full story.

Her story is sad, tragic, and amazing. It is dumbfounding that Stefan doesn't seem to remember her at every encounter and that he deserves anything bad that may happen to him. For a romance, this one was pretty good.
