Iron Monkey: Siu nin Wong Fei Hung ji (1993)

This Hong Kong film became popular in the United States when its funding was lead by Quentin Tarantino. Yet another Action 101 film, sadly I could only get the dubbed version.

Rongguang Yu [The Karate Kid] and Donnie Yen [Ip Man] star in an Asian version of Robin Hood [as imdb claims]. Yu plays a Doctor that steals money from the rich governor under the cover of "Iron monkey" to give to the people. I really see this more as an Asian Zorro film, instead of Robin Hood. Zorro was educated, had a day job as a wealth local and made the authority look like fools. Robin Hood wasn't an alter ego, instead he lived on the outskirts of town and was "Robin Hood" 24/7. Ok, maybe no one would argue this, so let's move on.

The film is interesting in that the initial conflict is between Iron Monkey and a different doctor. This doctor is also a martial artist and accused of being Iron Monkey, the only want to protect his daughter is to find the real Iron Monkey. Ironically Iron Monkey ends up helping his daughter and the two team up against the Governors hired assassins. The strangest thing about the film is that the daughter is referred to as "son" throughout the film, dubbed and original. The character is played by a girl, and looks like a girl, so it was very confusing while watching.

Good not great, there are some amazing choreographed action sequences at the end of this film that would make it worth watching. Overall I see it as somewhat forgettable though.

Vote: 7/10
