Fanny and Alexander (1982)

This film has been giving me writers block for about a week. It is hard to form an opinion on a film where I fail to understand so much. This is Ingmar Bergman's last feature length film and it was quite a challenge to get through.

The first is over 3 hours long and the first half starts on Christmas Eve and follows a wealthy family celebrating Christmas. They dance around the mansion, the kids go to bet, debauchery in sues. The 2nd half is almost a completely different story, the title characters Fanny and Alexander through difficult circumstances end up living with a mean stepfather than locks them in their room and treats them poorly.

The reason this has been so difficult to rate is that I don't know how to perceive the growing up in Sweden. Is this a typical Christmas that brings back fond memories? Like A Christmas Story to Americans? Is this supposed to be deep? I just don't get a lot of it, and it really just didn't interest me much. I have quite a bit of respect for Bergman so I still gave it a 6/10, but honestly without his name behind it, it might have been even lower. Fair? Probably not. Take it for what its worth.

From Paris With Love (2010)

The most fun I get out of these just HORRIBLE action films is that you can go onto the imdb message boards and read the threads like "What we learned from this movie." Then sarcastically list all of the plot holes, discontinuities, and general lack of quality script.

The selling point for me to watch this was the director, Pierre Morel . He also happened to direct Taken, one of the few movies I have given a 10/10 lately. So I was hoping for the best, despite the fact that the lead actors were questionable at best: John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The plot of this ridiculous movie is that Meyers is trying to become a government special agent, a job he didn't train for and is currently working for a government official. He is called in for his first job, which happens to be teamed up with Travolta, who is a complete bad ass with no remorse or respect for human life. Which is apparently cool?

The way Americans are portrayed was almost offensive and the plot holes were so bad it was hard to watch. Don't watch this... really.

The Young Victoria (2009)

Sandy Powell is a bitch. The costume designer who has 3 wins and 8 total Oscar nominations in the category made me not want to like this film. Her smug acceptance speech at this years Oscars pissed me off. In the end I had to watch this winner, and I got exactly what I expected: crap.

The film stars Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend in a coming of age love story about Queen Victoria in her teenage life. The film was more than a little confusing because if you don't memorize who is who from the start it is hard to understand what angles everyone is trying to take to get the crown. Sure it was probably accurate and the costumes looked good also. The storyline was boring, something geared for a teenage girl (much like this years An Education). It just didn't interest me, regardless of Ms. Powell's attitude.

Avoid it.

The Tale of Despereaux (2008)

It can be hard for me to find the time and desire to watch a film like this. If an animated film does not get an oscar nomination or make it on some sort of watch list then it at least needs some good marketing or star for me to want to see it.

The title character's voice is done by Matthew Broderick, a person who's career has faded over the last decade and he is left with animated voice over jobs. It also has Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson, Kevin Kline, Frank Langella, and Stanley Tucci. So not a bad cast of voices.

I gave this one a shot and was slightly impressed. The story had too much violence for really young kids, but at the same time had no mature jokes for an older crowd. Clearly a victim of no clear target audience, and a hard to pronounce title [phonetically it would read des-pro]. With just an average storyline and decent CGI this could have been a Disney Channel show or straight-to-video movie without the B-List voices.

Not bad if you are looking for a new kids movie, but forgettable.

The Bounty Hunter (2010)

Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston in the film Entertainment Weekly is dubbing Butler's Razzie contender. Although I agree that Butler is on track to win the award for worse performance of the year, I don't understand the hate for this film.

If you want to compare this is a Best picture nominee, then yes, it was awful. If you want to compare it with other films from its genre this year [e.g. Leap Year] it was not bad at all.

A ridiculous yet unique plot about a bounty hunter who's contract is to catch his ex-wife. Meanwhile a dirty cop is trying to catch Aniston because she is about to uncover him.

Not full of plot holes, not slapstick stupid, I don't see why people strongly dislike this one. If you like Aniston, you will probably like this one.

Persona: Kinematografi (1966)

For whatever reason my movie lists have led to me watching three Ingmar Bergman lately. This one being the first of those, and probably the best of them.

The movie is about an actress who has a nervous breakdown and makes the conscious decision to never speak again. She is committed and is sent to a beach front home with a nurse to "get better." The nurse starts to have conversations with the lady, who doesn't respond and starts to drive her a bit crazy also.

The film has some twists and you really have to think about what might be going on. The thing I don't understand is the random images that this movie opens up with. It gives it an avant-garde feel then turns out to be a slow film with intense dialogue.

This is no The Seventh Seal or Wild Strawberries, both of which I have 8/10's. Just average for me.

Marathon Man (1976)

A pretty fitting movie for me right now. Personally I'm gearing up to run a marathon at the end of the year, so watching a film about a marathon runner [and college student] starring Dustin Hoffman sounded pretty good.

Watched as part of the AFI 100 Thrills list, I'm finding that this has been my favorite list to work my way though. All of the lists have quality films in the top 25, but once you get into the bottom 1/2 they rarely are worth watching. So far the list has come up with a lot of winners.

This story is about ex-Nazi's and American spy's. Hoffman is stuck in the middle of his brothers undercover plan gone awry. With a painful and memorable scene involving a torturing dentist repeating over and over "Is it safe?" This film gave me several reasons why I will always remember it. Which to me, is enough to consider worth watching.

The only thing I really disliked about the movie is the soundtrack. There are several scenes where the background music is just a painfully loud ringing. I had to turn the volume way down several times because of it, and had I seen this in the theater back in 1976 I'm sure I would have left with a headache.

Check this one out.

Out of Africa (1985)

The last Oscar Best Picture winner of the last 50 years left for me to watch; features Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in an epic based on a true story.

The story is about a Danish woman who marries a friend to avoid being a spinster. This is a good example that marrying a friend in hopes of happiness is a very bad idea; there has to be love in a marriage. So she was a rich duchess in Denmark and went to meet her future husband in Kenya. Using her family's money to start a business they planned to start a farm, but without her approval he decides to try and grow coffee beans in a region that has never shown success.

Her husband neglects her and just comes around for money, Streep falls in love with Robert Redford's character, and after a divorce they start a relationship.

It is truly a very sad movie overall. Quite depressing, good acting though, and very long. Average because both of the stars Redford and Streep have MANY better films. This won the Oscar in a very weak year with only The Color Purple as real competition.

If you want to see all the Oscar winners this one isn't bad, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see it again.

Library of Congress: National Film Registry (5)

Part 5 of the Library of Congress features 5 films. 3 of which are NOT silent, and 4 of which are close to an hour a piece. Watched over the last several months as I've happened upon them. Here is a brief write up on each.

Big Business (1929) [8/10]
Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy are a fun pair. This short film gives you a good taste of their comedy. Something that I could easily see fitting into a scene from a feature length film, yet standing on its own very well. At only 19 minutes this is the shortest film in this listing of the LoC. It is the best not because of its length, but instead for its entertainment value.

This film was actually very hard to find. It is part of the Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy Volume 1, a very expensive buy on Amazon and removed from Youtube. I greatly appreciate the individual that gave this to me and hope to watch the entire lost films collection eventually. If you can find it then check it out.

The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress (1944) [7/10]
The Germans had the Red Baron, the Americans had the Memphis Belle. A USAAF Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress that was in 25 complete missions in Europe including a very important one over German. This documentary shouldn't be confused with the fictional remake of the 1990s, it is easy to find from government archive footage and features some pretty good footage of the Memphis Belle in action. Not the most exciting however, and not something I'd watch again. If you are a WWII or fighter plane nut you should watch this.

Sky High (1922) [6/10]
The 6/10 is very generous for this 1920s silent western. Really only good for its camera footage of a stunt man REALLY flying over the Grand Canyon. The first flight over the canyon was for this movie. Pretty cool, and I wouldn't want to be the first in a rickety 1920's plane. Someone had to be, and if you can find the 5 minutes of footage of this then skip the boring plot of this pretty basic silent "save-the-damsel-in-distress" film.

The March (1964) [6/10]
I fail to understand why the Library of Congress wants to add a film like this to the archive. Less than a handful of people have seen it, there aren't even 5 votes on imdb, including my own for this one. I fully understand why they THINK it needs to be in here. It is archive footage from the million man march, but I think they are diverging a little from the idea of archiving historic memorable film. Are their no other editions of the million man march out there? A CBS or NBC documentary? Something that millions watched in their homes, rather than something narrated by a white guy just for this archive? I like the idea, but not the film.

A Time for Burning (1967) [5/10]
Here is a film that looks at the burning issue of segregation in a small town in Nebraska. Nominated for an Academy Award, this film follows a local priest that attempts to unify his church racially just to see his congregation reject the idea and kick him out. He had support from some, but without everyone on board it collapsed. This collapse had happened before, so it was expected. But it brought forth a lot of those issues, and for its time hopefully was an inspirational film.

A pretty average group, nothing all that exciting, nothing that was really that bad. Until next time...

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

You'll love this movie if... you love hearing the F word every 30 seconds. Man I hate John Cusack. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Fool me 6 times in a row then I must be the idiot. He hasn't been in a good movie in over a decade, and I keep hoping his role will be minor enough the films will still be somewhat good, but they aren't.

I watched this because I though Craig Robinson [from The Office] and Rob Corddry [from The Daily Show] would make this movie worthwhile. Boy was I wrong. All of the jokes fell into the crude, gay, or sexual jokes, and that isn't enough to make an entire film.

Chevy Chase makes a cameo, but it isn't even funny, it just doesn't make sense. Which is even more annoying. Don't watch this one.

Disturbia (2007)

A film that clearly has a teenage target audience, starring Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer. A plot so predictable that you expect a twist but don't get one. One that starts as a boring drama but ends as a thriller/horror.

There really isn't much to say about this one, it was really a let down because I expected more from LaBeouf, yet not really from Roemer. David Morse has always been a B-Grade actor to me and that is what I got from this movie. The openness the killer had to allow a kid across the street to see what he was doing was just ridiculous. The 6/10 was a very generous rating for this one.

The Big Parade (1925)

Oh... so this has nothing to do with a parade... The title definitely made me overlook watching this film for a while. At over two hours a silent movie isn't appealing in the first place, but I am happy I finally watched it.

A film starring John Gilbert how acted in almost 100 silent films, and co-starring Renée Adorée a French born actress who got her break in this movie only to die of tuberculosis at the age of 35.

The plot of the film is that James Apperson [Gilbert], son of a rich businessman enlists and is shipped to France. He falls in love with Melisande [Adoree] but when his troop is called to the front line they are separated.

Just another example of a quality American silent film. Easy to follow subtitles, good pace for a silent film, and some really gripping war scenes for a silent movie, pretty good but I'm not watching it again.

Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman star in the 1989 Academy Award Best Picture Winner about an old Jewish woman in the south who forced to have a driver after a minor car wreck.

Tandy won the Best Actress Oscar as well, making her the oldest winner to date (81 years). Surprisingly Dan Aykroyd did a really good job in this dramatic role, as apposed to the comedic performances he is known for.

The film handles some racial and otherwise difficult subject matter in a fairly light mood. The plot progresses well and the timeline progresses at a rate that can be hard to follow at times. There are no dates and it is hard to realize they have been together 10+ years at one point. I'm thinking this is the point, showing that these two spend 1/2 a lifetime together and it passed like nothing.

Just a quality film all around. Many spoofs over the years may fog the reality of how good this film really is.

Kandahar: Safar e Ghandehar (2001)

What a movie poster, "Best Picture of the Year!," "Extraordinary!"... really. This was a very boring film about a college age girl wandering around Afghanistan trying to get to the city where her sister is.

Why? Well her sister wants to commit suicide and she has to get there in three days to stop her. She is air dropped into a small village and pays a man to take her to the city. He ditches her the first chance he gets. This goes on several more times and we even take a complete tangent where some guy is trying to get new artificial legs for his wife. The acting is just horrible by the Red Cross workers, not even worthy of a high school drama production, REALLY. They are just reading their lines with no emotion. I wasn't exactly drawn into the movie but this really put me off.

The film ends with no conclusion and I just felt like this journey I was led on was a complete waste of time. Horrible film that should have never been added to the 1001 Movies to See Before You Die book, maybe there are a few meant to kill you? Should I have watched this one last?

The Invention of Lying (2009)

Ricky Gervais, creator of "The Office" (US) and star of "The Office" (UK) takes his first stab as writer and director of an American film.

The concept is simple, almost simple enough that you would assume the film would be lacking. Imagine a world where no one can lie. By that it also apparently means that not blurting out the truth all the time you are lying.

Jennifer Garner stars alongside Gervais as the girl out of his league. They go on a date and she makes it clear that he would produce ugly children so they are incompatible. Gervais figures out how to lie and uses this power to convince her that he is good enough.

The film could have easily made a turn for the evil. He could have had any woman, made billions, and swindled everyone. He does use his power for his own good, but manages to keep a good conscious throughout.

I enjoyed it, it was playful and made me laugh. I didn't expect much from it and Gervais and Garner both did really well. This was a nice bounce back for Garner who has had some really minor roles since her bomb Elektra in 2005.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)

Before I proceed to bash this movie, I'll start by saying that The Boondock Saints (1999) is one of the few movies I gave a 10/10. Without ruining that film, let's say that part of the joy of that film is seeing how they got their start as "The Saints" and the events around this.

The original film had an interesting detective and a lot of action. We started at the scene of the crime then replayed the events as the FBI detective reenacted exactly how he saw it play out. Cool concept.

The problem with this movie is they didn't make a sequel per se, all they did is try and clone the movie. An incredible amount of cursing, the Saints made mistakes, the supporting actors were awful, especially the policemen.

I really questioned why I was putting myself through this one about 15 minutes in. Julie Benz was a B grade actress at best, and Clifton Collins Jr. as Romeo was horrible. He was an unnecessary addition and paled in comparison to Rocco from the original. Waste of time.

Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country (2009)

A gripping story about undercover reporters in Burma who risk their lives attempting to make the world aware of their suffering. Journalism is illegal in Burma, and government agents are undercover all over the cities ready to arrest anyone taking pictures of shooting film.

The narrator of this film is the main character as well. We follow him around as he films a monk uprising. He then goes into hiding in Singapore were he is sent video by his fellow colleagues in the field. He then edits the video, and sends it out over satellite to friends in Denmark who distribute the content to the BBC and other networks.

The film is exciting, sad, and inspiring. Following this uprising and the governments retaliation will make you fume with anger. It is hard to believe this is still going on today. An Oscar nominee with an important message, I was sorry to see this one overlooked because of other great documentaries in 2009 [e.g. The Cove and Food, Inc.]

The Last Laugh: Der letzte Mann (1924)

Director F.W. Murnau is probably better known for his films Nosferatu and Sunrise. This is probably his third most popular film and for me a complete waste of time.

The story is in all simplicity about a doorman that is looked up to until he is forced into retirement. Without his fancy doorman attire he is no longer respected in his community.

Plain and simple, and actually just WAY to simple. I never felt attached to the character, so I didn't care that he got laid off. Then the director wants a happy ending so it by luck strikes it rich. This complete ridiculous tangent makes the director seem like a 5-year-old telling a story. Just not good.

"Black Magic" (2008)

Surprise! The ESPN writer that made the top 10 sports documentaries of all time felt that a tv mini-series deserved to be considered a movie.

This documentary that aired on tv (hence the "" around the title), was about 4 and a half hours total. The writers did a *good job of taking many unnecessary tangents and hoping between multiple storylines [*sarcasm].

I really expected this to be a history of black athletes in basketball, but it really focused on the history of basketball at black colleges. Although interesting, there were many things that they wandered off to and away from basketball, that could have been used to cover a large amount of black basketball history they completely neglected. There is nothing about Wilt Chamberlain and his 100 point game. There is nothing about the West Texas team beating Kentucky.

I do actually know a good amount of basketball history, this this did not cover everything that it should have. Don't get me wrong there is some very interesting stuff here. But it is by no means all inclusive.

Hands on a Hard Body (1997)

Another sports documentary watched as part of the ESPN "The Watchlist." This one is about a contest started in Longview, TX by a automobile dealership called "Hands on a Hard Body"

The idea is simple, stand with one hand on the car, no leaning, 5 minute breaks every hour, 15 minutes every 4 hours. The last person standing keeps the car.

A simple concept, and one a wide range of people felt they could excel at. Most people probably think, "Sure I could do that." The film is slow and talks to a previous winner quite a bit. Things get repetitive because there just isn't that much to talk about.

The winner makes it roughly 3 days straight and predicting who that will be and watching people fade away is kinda fun. This could have been a 20 minute show though. Considering it to be a feature length documentary makes it drag on... maybe that was the point... showing you just how boring this whole thing was.

Just ok.

Scarface: The Shame of a Nation (1932)

Yay! The last film for me to complete the American Film Institute's 10Top10 list released in 2008. A gangster film that I had to buy on ebay to get my hands on, and the back cover of the dvd is in Korean.

The sad thing is that I had really high hopes for this one and it was just not that exciting. Paul Muni plays Tony, a character you are likely familiar with if you have seen the modern day remake (which is much much better). The opening of the film has the director posting dialog about how we should condemn these actions and support the police force in preventing these actions in the future. The film then goes on to glorify and glamorize the gangster lifestyle, which was all very confusing.

There were only a few good one liners and the action sequences were not as action packed as I hoped for, movies like Public Enemy and others on the AFI Gangster list were better. Not much more to say than pass on this one and watch the modern one twice.

Valentine's Day (2010)

I consider this film an American version of Love Actually. A romantic comedy with many intertwined love stories with a very full cast... all with minor roles.

Jessica Alba & Ashton Kutcher start as the main couple. Jennifer Garner & Patrick Dempsey then get pulled into the mix. Round out a full cast with Kathy Bates, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, and a dozen other minor stars.

With so many minor roles the actors rely on the director and editor to make the film worth watching. This was obviously just fun for everyone involved, and not an attempt at a good cinematic film, so if they aren't trying is it worth watching? No. Was just at least ok? Well yeah... kinda.

There were some good parts, Kutcher's storyline and Julia Roberts storyline were entertaining. The high school storyline with Taylor Swift was just awful. So were the Jamie Foxx and Anne Hathaway stories. A 6/10 was very generous. Don't get your hopes up on this one.

Pumping Iron (1977)

The Arnold Schwarzenegger body building documentary was the 6th film in my attempt to watch the ESPN Top 10 Sports Documentaries. This is by far the creepiest film on the list, and one of the strangest I've seen in a while.

Arnold has some very interesting quotes in this film about equating working out to an orgasm. Smoking pot. Deliberately giving fellow competitors bad advice. Good thing he is in politics now... or does this just explain why that career move was a good choice.

The look into the lives of the people he is competing against just goes to show you how many people have different motivations in life. There are some very colorful people in these competitions, most of which have some sort of inferiority complex, are dim witted, or are quite full of themselves. I wouldn't say this to any of their faces though...

With 70's porn music playing in the background while oiled up guys in Speedo's flexed their muscles it definitely made me a little uncomfortable to watch. The most interesting thing about the film to me was when they panned over the audience during the competition. What kind of people go and watch these? Middle aged women? Aspiring body builders? Friends/Family? Guys questioning their sexuality?

Interesting look at an interesting demographic, Pumping Iron II is about lady body builders, maybe I'll check it out to see if they are just as colorful.

The Book of Eli (2010)

A post-apocalyptic action film starring Denzel Washington as a blind man guided by faith with the last surviving copy of The Bible.

A film that touches on the events that led to the current status, does a horrible job explaining that the man is blind with constant hints that he is not (peaking over a rock at one point), and generally bad acting from all the supporting cast.

It takes him over 30 years to make it from the East to West coast, but don't worry he is just an afternoon's drive from his final destination the entire film. Silly with a very cheesy ending and a slow and boring plot.

If you are going to watch this one, at least watch it in High Def. to take advantage of some decent camera work. Not worth your time... Denzel is not Mad Max...

When We Were Kings (1996)

This turned out to be a much narrower documentary subject than I expected it to be. I thought it was going to document Ali's career as a boxer, or a phase of that. Yet, this film was really only about a single fight: The Rumble In The Jungle.

We start about 6 months before the fight, talk about how it came to be in Zaire. Talk about the delays. See some actual footage, discuss the strategy of the boxers. Then we wrap up without talking much about what happened to the boxers after the fight.

The scope was way to narrow. It was filled with live music performances and unnecessary interviews that could have been filled with a lot more useful information to the history of these men instead.

Watched as part of the "ESPN: The Watchlist" and just average.

In The Loop (2009)

The only thing cool about this crude dry British comedy that pulled an Oscar nomination out of nowhere is that it features Anna Chlumsky [the girl from the movie My Girl]. For the whole film I had one of those "where do I know her from?" feelings. So yeah, that is about it....

Ok... fine... this dry comedy was more like a curse word filled drama about a British Secretary of State who is a complete boob. He makes some off topic remarks about war and is throw into the spotlight of a conflict that could send Britain and the US into a war (not against each other, but against an unnamed country).

Clearly some sort of spoof on events that happened earlier in the decade. Not my cup of tea, probably not yours either. Pass on this one...

Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (2009)

The 3rd of 5 Oscar documentaries from this years Oscar nominees. Hard to compete with The Cove and Food, Inc., two excellent documentaries that stole the entire spotlight.

Earlier in the decade a documentary called Fog of War won the Oscar. It was a film about an interview with Robert McNamera, the Secretary of Defense that served the country during World War II and Vietnam. The "Seven Lessons" he spoke of were interesting, and a good lesson for future leaders.

This film is about Daniel Ellsberg, a man that worked for McNamera and was responsible for leaking the Pentagon Papers. The historic implications of him releasing the papers are that 1) It gave the press the room to criticize the government, 2) triggered Watergate. Both of these things were not directly Ellsberg's doings. He wasn't the strongest character and the film was quite boring. It took me over a week to work my way through this dry rehashing of the events. I felt like I was sitting in an old folks home listening to some old man babbling. Don't waste your time, you can read a wikipedia entry on this guy in 5 minutes and save yourself the hassle of finding this film.
