The last Oscar Best Picture winner of the last 50 years left for me to watch; features Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in an epic based on a true story.
The story is about a Danish woman who marries a friend to avoid being a spinster. This is a good example that marrying a friend in hopes of happiness is a very bad idea; there has to be love in a marriage. So she was a rich duchess in Denmark and went to meet her future husband in Kenya. Using her family's money to start a business they planned to start a farm, but without her approval he decides to try and grow coffee beans in a region that has never shown success.
Her husband neglects her and just comes around for money, Streep falls in love with Robert Redford's character, and after a divorce they start a relationship.
It is truly a very sad movie overall. Quite depressing, good acting though, and very long. Average because both of the stars Redford and Streep have MANY better films. This won the Oscar in a very weak year with only The Color Purple as real competition.
If you want to see all the Oscar winners this one isn't bad, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see it again.
