The Invention of Lying (2009)

Ricky Gervais, creator of "The Office" (US) and star of "The Office" (UK) takes his first stab as writer and director of an American film.

The concept is simple, almost simple enough that you would assume the film would be lacking. Imagine a world where no one can lie. By that it also apparently means that not blurting out the truth all the time you are lying.

Jennifer Garner stars alongside Gervais as the girl out of his league. They go on a date and she makes it clear that he would produce ugly children so they are incompatible. Gervais figures out how to lie and uses this power to convince her that he is good enough.

The film could have easily made a turn for the evil. He could have had any woman, made billions, and swindled everyone. He does use his power for his own good, but manages to keep a good conscious throughout.

I enjoyed it, it was playful and made me laugh. I didn't expect much from it and Gervais and Garner both did really well. This was a nice bounce back for Garner who has had some really minor roles since her bomb Elektra in 2005.
