Considered by many to be one of the very best films of the year, if not the best. The film is a physiological thriller about a dancer going through a nervous breakdown. Without spoiling the film, let's stop at that.
Natalie Portman plays Nina, a ballerina in the New York City ballet company and auditioning for the leading role in Swan Lake. A role that requires that she basically play two characters the "White Swan" and the "Black Swan." Mila Kunis, better known for her role in That '70s Show proves that she is a legitimate actress in this film. She plays Lily, a girl that has just joined the NYC company from San Francisco, I'll let the film speak for the rest.
Director Darren Aronofsky did a fantastic job taking the audience on roller coaster ride through Nina's vantage point. The relationship between her, her mother, the artistic director, and Lily are all very complex and exciting to watch. This is worth multiple viewings.
How does it relate to the other Best Picture nominees for the year? Well with 10 it is easily in the top half, but is it better than the two front runners? In most respects no. There are some very strong performances and I expect this film will have some staying power in an overall weak year in film.
