Recommended to me by my father, said to remind him of someone we both know very well. Also on Roger Eberts Top 10 list of the year [that is if you consider that he put 30 films on his top 10]. The third "S___ Man" film I've watch in the last year also, first there was A Serious Man, then A Single Man, now Solitary Man, enough already!
Actually the best of the S-Man films, but still just average. A very colorful cast though. Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office), and Jesse Eisenberg (Mr. Facebook). The film is about a man who uses his hypochondria to justify his downward spiral. Sure he is going to die soon he starts cheating, making illegal business deals, and ruining his family relationships.
Sometimes people want "A POINT" for every movie, but this is one that is really just a character study. Short, simple, and sad (not depressing) because of the self destructive behavior. Aspects of his life to remind me of a certain person, namely the conversation with his new found young friend Daniel [Jesse Eisenberg]. He tells him how women are so easy and predictable then balls to him about how he is going die soon with no real proof that the end is that near. I can see how reviews would be really split on this one.
