A biography/drama about growing up on the bad side of town in Los Angeles. By no means is this what I expected. Why? I expected this to resemble a film like Juice, starring Tupac Shakur. I was fully prepared for a drug and gun filled film was excessive violence. Since there are some killings in this on I did still categorize this as "Crime" but it was a lit more dramatic than expected.
The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr. as Tre, Nia Long (Will Smith's girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Laurence Fishburne, and Ice Cube. Cuba and Ice a friends, Nia is Cuba's girlfriend, and Fishburne plays Cuba's dad. We start with Tre as a boy acting up in school and is sent by his mom to live with his dad in South Central. His father turns out to be a good influence and we just forward to the boys as high school seniors.
The story is well developed, it brings forward a lot of emotion, and does a great job presenting the problems in the ghetto. John Singleton was even nominated for two Oscars for his directing and writing on this film. Well deserved, and a really good film, with a really good cast.
