The annual Nicole Kidman crying drama, I am starting to get used to a film like this being a lock for a Globe or Oscar nomination, in this case both. This is a film about a married couple that is struggling after the loss of a child. With an estimated budget of $5mil and a total gross of less than $2mil two months after opening weekend. I'm not sure why these films keep getting made. "Hey honey, for date night let's get a sitter for our kid and go watch a film about parents who just lost their kid!"
Aside from it being a difficult film with not much plot, the acting was actually very good. Nicole Kidman was much better in this film than anything else I've seen her in since Eyes Wide Shut, and I've seen her A LOT since then. She wouldn't have been as good if it wasn't for Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest, though. Their performances made this film worth watching, the dynamic of the couple finding such different approaches to coping was interesting also. Wiest had a really good scene with her daughter [Kidman], that seemed really authentic.
The title comes from a comic book, not an Alice in Wonderland reference. The source of the comic book would be giving you too much information. It was a cute title and the interludes building to it made the film unique. I don't see how I could suggest a film like this, and don't desire to watch it again. For what it is, it was good though.
